Many families are choosing to reinvent and get creative with their well wishes in the time of COVID-19! BY CEVEL REGIS Covid-19 has led to the implementation of social distancing, quarantine, and stay-at-home measures all over the world. This has limited the way we can enjoy major life celebrations - like weddings, birthdays, graduations, and baby showers.
But, instead of canceling events, many families are choosing to reinvent and get creative with their well wishes. This has led to the introduction of the Drive-By Baby Shower - a trend that kicked off in the US and is becoming increasingly popular amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. It involves friends and family forming a parade outside the expectant mother’s house, with signs and balloons - while she stands a safe distance away enjoying the activity. Gifts are intermittently dropped off outside of the house within safe social isolation guidelines. Recently, Dineka Rooy of East London, South Africa, was showered with cheers, well-wishes, and gifts as her friends and family hosted a surprise drive-by baby shower for her. One by one they greeted Rooy as they celebrated her coming bundle of joy, using social distancing guidelines of course. They even stole a second for a photo op to capture the special occasion. With social distancing expected to be the new normal for a while, is this the beginning of a new era for baby showers? Do you think this new trend will gain popularity in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean? To see Rooy’s drive-by baby shower click here.
